Pakistan in May

Mountain valleys before the busiest weeks. A seasonal guide to where to go, what to expect and how to shape your journey.

The seasonal perspective

Is May right for your trip?

May can suit travellers who want forts, lakes and village walks without building the entire holiday around high passes. It is especially useful for a Skardu or Hunza trip with several nights in one base.

Where to focus

For Skardu in May, concentrate on town, nearby lakes and Shigar, with access checked locally. Hunza offers forts, Karimabad and Upper Hunza scenery. Choose one region if you have less than ten days.

Weather & daylight

Heat becomes a significant consideration in Lahore, Islamabad and the south. Northern valley days are often more comfortable, while exposed viewpoints and evenings can still be cold.

Plan around

Babusar and Deosai can remain snowbound. A May itinerary should work without either. Snowmelt can affect roads, streams and walking routes even when there is no fresh snowfall.

Seasonal patterns are a starting point, not a forecast. Check the Pakistan Meteorological Department for your travel dates.

Where to go in May

Our editorial shortlist favours time in a place over long daily transfers. Use these guides to decide where you want a deeper stay.

Islamabad

Use the capital for a gentle arrival, cafés and viewpoints. Select a short Margalla walk only when weather, visibility and local advice suit it; an indoor cultural stop is a useful alternative.

Skardu

Build a comfortable base for nearby lakes, town and Shigar. Ask your host which roads are suitable that day; the season does not guarantee access to every high-altitude excursion.

Khaplu

Spend time with Baltistan’s architecture and village surroundings. A local guide can help you understand the heritage and select walks that fit the season and your available energy.

Snow, roads & access

Babusar and Deosai can remain snowbound. A May itinerary should work without either. Snowmelt can affect roads, streams and walking routes even when there is no fresh snowfall.

Snow can remain on high ground outside winter. A warm valley afternoon does not establish that a pass, meadow or trekking route is accessible. Ask for a recent local assessment of the exact place you want to visit.

Check the complete route with your driver or operator before paying for transfers. A road being physically open does not establish that the route is appropriate under current travel advice.

What to pack

Sunhat, sunglasses, breathable clothes, a warm fleece or jacket and a waterproof shell. Include walking shoes; sandals alone are not enough for village tracks.

Bring regular medication, copies of essential documents, a power bank and a day bag. Dress respectfully for religious and heritage sites, and check any specific requirements with your guide.

Best experiences this month

Choose village walks, fort visits and lake or valley viewpoints. Put the longest excursion on the day with the best locally assessed conditions, and keep a shorter cultural alternative ready.

Festivals & events

Check official tourism announcements for regional cultural programmes. Public holidays and religious occasions can alter opening times; verify the actual calendar for your travel year before planning accommodation and transfers.

Ramadan and Eid follow the lunar calendar and move between seasons. Confirm the travel year’s dates and allow for changed opening hours, busy transport and accommodation demand.

No future-year event dates are presented here as confirmed. Check official GB tourism announcements, venue information and your host before booking. Follow current guidance on crowds and public gatherings.

A starting route

A suggested May itinerary

10 days · Baltistan at a measured pace. This is our original seasonal suggestion; the linked shorter itinerary is a useful companion, with nights added for a calmer pace.

Day 1 · 1 night

Islamabad

Make arrival day a gentle one, with time to rest and prepare. Keep the next day’s northern flight separate from your international connection.

Days 2–5 · 4 nights

Skardu

Fly to Skardu if operating and settle into one base. Mix nearby lakes, Shigar and town visits. Deosai is an optional excursion only when confirmed open, with suitable weather and a local operator.

Days 6–7 · 2 nights

Khaplu

Allow roughly 3–4 hours from Skardu in ordinary conditions, longer with stops or road work. Focus on heritage and nearby walks instead of adding another major valley.

Day 8 · 1 night

Skardu

Return to the airport area and keep this day flexible. Reconfirm the next flight and avoid placing your most important experience on this buffer day.

Days 9–10 · 1 night

Islamabad & departure

Allow an Islamabad night before flying internationally. If the Skardu flight changes, have funds and flexibility for extra accommodation rather than a hurried road journey.

Make it work for you

With fewer days, remove a region rather than compressing every stop. With more time, add nights in your favourite base and keep a spare day before your international departure.

Travel times are broad planning estimates, not timetables. Confirm actual services, access and conditions with your airline, accommodation and local operator.

Where to stay

Look for a well-reviewed base with reliable hot water, heating when needed and realistic transfer arrangements. Karimabad suits Hunza heritage visits; Skardu town is useful for airport buffers, and Khaplu works for a quieter Baltistan stay.

Northern flights and mountain journeys require contingency time. Do not treat a cancelled flight as a reason to take an unsuitable alternative road route.

Questions about Pakistan in May

Is May a good time to visit Pakistan?

May can suit travellers who want forts, lakes and village walks without building the entire holiday around high passes. It is especially useful for a Skardu or Hunza trip with several nights in one base. The right choice depends on the region, the activities you want and how much flexibility you have.

Can I visit Hunza or Skardu in May?

For a northern trip, plan around valley-based activities and confirm flights, accommodation operation and local roads before booking. High-altitude excursions need their own access check.

What should I avoid assuming in May?

Do not assume that a mountain road is open, that blossom or autumn colour peaks on an exact date, or that an annual festival has an unchanged schedule. Build a route that still works if one optional experience is unavailable.
