A two-week northern route through Hunza and Baltistan, with time to appreciate the stops.
Pakistan itineraries / 2027 trip planning
This northern journey moves from the gateway city of Gilgit into Hunza, then crosses to Skardu for lakes, villages and the option of a Deosai day. It uses weather-dependent flights for the long approach and exit, and gives the Gilgit–Skardu road a full day of its own. The suggested pace protects your time in the mountains.
Begin and end in Islamabad. Thirteen planned nights: three in Islamabad across the trip, two in Gilgit, four in Hunza and four in Skardu. The final Islamabad night separates the planned northern return flight from your departure.
Best season to consider
Late spring to early autumn offers more mountain-outing options. Read the season guide before choosing dates. Deosai needs a separate local access check; its inclusion remains optional.
Transport and pace
Two weather-dependent northern flights and a driver for regional transfers. Allow 2–3 hours of driving plus stops from Gilgit to Karimabad, and a full day for the Gilgit–Skardu transfer. Short village walks and fort steps are part of the core plan; technical trekking is not.
Build a budget for this route
Price 13 nights, two domestic flights per person, airport transfers, the inter-valley driver and local outings. Add meals, admissions and any Deosai vehicle not included in the quote. Keep a separate reserve for changed flights and extra nights. Use the budget planner to compare current quotes; 2027 prices need confirmation.
Accommodation bases
Choose a Karimabad base for four nights of Hunza outings, an accessible Gilgit transit hotel and a Skardu base for the Baltistan block. Compare location, steps, heating, hot water and cancellation terms in the local stays directory; confirm all arrangements directly.
When roads or flights change
Replace Deosai with Satpara or nearby Skardu visits when access is unsuitable. If the Gilgit–Skardu crossing is unavailable, stay at a safe base and replan with your driver. A cancelled northern flight may require changing the route or adding days; the final buffer cannot guarantee an international connection.
This plan includes Islamabad arrival and departure days; the 10-day alternative starts in Gilgit and ends in Skardu. They are different trip formats. Total road distance varies with hotels and optional outings; request route mileage from your transport provider.

The journey deserves room of its own. These planning allowances help you leave time for a meal, a view and a calm arrival. They are estimates, not live road reports or guaranteed arrival times.
Allow 2–3 hours of driving, plus stops
Gilgit → Karimabad
Keep the transfer gentle. Pause for valley views only at safe pull-offs, then arrive at your Karimabad base in daylight. A sit-down tea or lunch belongs in the day, rather than an extra distant excursion.
Reserve a full scenic day
Karimabad → Attabad → Gulmit → Passu
Combine lake views, a village walk and an unhurried meal. Choose fewer stops if you want time on the water; return to Karimabad before dark rather than adding Khunjerab to the same outing.
Allow 6–8 hours with breaks; keep the full day free
Gilgit → Skardu
Set out early with a local driver. Build in a meal and short river-view stops where parking is safe. Reconfirm the road that morning and keep the arrival evening simple.

The daily route
Day by day
These are considered days, not fixed departures. Confirm transport and opening times locally, and leave room for the places that deserve a longer stop.
Select a day, then tap its title to open the full plan. Keep several days open to compare them.
Day 01 / 14ArrivalArrive in Islamabad
Settle into the capital and keep the first day light. A short local outing works better than a transfer after international travel.
See Faisal Mosque and Pakistan Monument, with time for a nearby neighbourhood or viewpoint if conditions allow. Confirm the Gilgit flight and driver arrangement.
Overnight: Islamabad. Check the airline’s latest schedule.
Take the flight north when conditions permit, then spend the remainder of the day in Gilgit. The mountain arrival is its own experience and deserves a calm afternoon.
Overnight: Gilgit. A flight delay may shift the following day.
Spend time at Attabad Lake, then continue to Gulmit if the road and day length allow. The turquoise water and upper-valley settlements create a varied day.
Overnight: Karimabad. Boat trips are optional, subject to conditions.
Drive onward for views of Passu Cones and a village stop, then return south. Leave several hours for stops and the road rather than making distant pass crossings compulsory.
Travel the Gilgit–Skardu road with an experienced local driver. Plan the whole day for the transfer and enjoy the river scenery without promising a fixed arrival hour.
Take a locally arranged Deosai excursion only if the plateau is open and conditions suit the group. Satpara Lake and nearby Skardu sights provide an easier alternative.
Overnight: Skardu. Carry warm layers and water for the high-altitude option.
The 14 days begin and end in Islamabad and rely on northern flights. Compare the full flight-and-driver plan before confirming hotels. A road replacement for a cancelled flight is a new journey to assess, not a promise to complete the same itinerary on the same dates.
Bases and transport
Keep the Hunza block together, then use Gilgit as the overnight break before the Skardu crossing. Moving accommodation every night would eat into the time available for the forts, lakes and villages. Choose properties for location and transfer access as well as the mountain view.
Where to add or remove time
Price the Gilgit–Skardu crossing as a dedicated vehicle day. Ask whether local lake outings, entry tickets, guides, meals and any Deosai vehicle are included or additional. Leave the final Islamabad night flexible enough to absorb a shifted return flight.
Everyday arrangements
Ask your accommodation about cash or card payment, mobile coverage for your network, Wi-Fi and power back-up. Carry a cash contingency and keep essential addresses offline. Tell hosts about dietary needs before remote stays; confirm meal availability rather than assuming restaurants will be nearby. For every quote, ask about entry tickets, guides, meals, fuel and cancellation terms.
Visit times and programme choices are editorial planning suggestions, not fixed departures or live access reports. Use the trip budget tool with current provider quotes and read quieter discoveries for possible extensions.
Make it your own
Planning notes
Best time to consider
Late spring to early autumn for the broadest set of mountain outings. Deosai and upper roads are seasonal and require a local access check.
Getting between stops
Gilgit to Hunza is a transfer day; Gilgit to Skardu can use the whole day. The two northern flights need rebooking flexibility and at least one spare city night.
What to budget for
Compare domestic flights with change terms, a local driver for both regions, accommodation, entrances, optional Deosai vehicle and a reserve for weather changes.
A sensible adjustment
This route concentrates on Hunza and Skardu. Fairy Meadows and the Naran valley are separate additions that require more road time and a season-specific review.
Useful answers
Questions before you go
Can I fit Hunza, Skardu and Naran into two weeks?
It is possible only with more transfer pressure. This version prioritises two regions and an allowance for mountain weather.
How much hiking is required?
The core route uses short walks; longer hikes are optional and need separate local planning.
