Off the beaten track · the itinerary collection
Three quieter ways to spend a week.
Choose one region and give it time. These detailed routes include daily ideas, overnight bases, practical notes and maps you can explore stop by stop.
7 days · starts and ends in Gilgit
Ghizer & Phander
A Gupis overnight, three nights in Phander and time beside the lake.
7 days · starts and ends in Skardu
Shigar & Khaplu
Two-night heritage stays, Balti village lanes and a calmer road rhythm.
7 days · starts and ends in Gilgit
Upper Hunza villages
Four nights around Gulmit, with separate days for Ghulkin and Passu.
Beyond the
usual stops.
These are places to give time to, rather than a race to somewhere more remote. Some are known and loved locally; a weekday visit or an extra night can change how you experience them.
Graham visited Sharan Forest, Shogran and the Taxila area in May 2026. This collection combines that travel context with researched planning notes. Phander, Khaplu, Ganish and the specific Jaulian visit below are researched suggestions, not first-hand reviews.
Turn off the main road.
Two different ways to add forest and mountain scenery to a Kaghan Valley journey.
Sharan Forest
The appeal is the forest itself: pine-covered slopes, open clearings and time away from the through-route. Make this a deliberate detour rather than another hurried stop between towns.
- Make time
- Our suggestion: a full day, or an overnight stay confirmed in advance.
- Approach
- Via Paras in the Kaghan Valley. Arrange a suitable local jeep and confirm the track before setting out.
- When & base
- Plan a snow-free visit with local advice. Use the valley as a base, or confirm an operating stay at Sharan.
- Local help
- A local driver is useful for the access track; use a guide for unfamiliar forest walks.
Confirm accommodation, daylight return arrangements and weather. Do not assume every forest track is a walking route.
Shogran, at your own pace
Shogran is a well-known hill stay, but it need not be a rushed transfer to Siri Paye. Give the base itself a night, leave room for the view, and treat any higher excursion as a separate decision.
- Make time
- Our suggestion: 1–2 nights, with an uncommitted day for the weather.
- Approach
- Turn towards Shogran from Kiwai. Ask your host which vehicle suits current conditions.
- When & base
- Choose a season with confirmed road access and an operating stay in Shogran.
- Local help
- Arrange higher tracks and walks with a local driver or guide; assess them independently of access to Shogran.
A familiar destination can still offer a quieter visit. Weekends and holiday periods may be busy.
Give the valley another morning.
Choose one region and make space for it. These are extensions to plan carefully, rather than places to squeeze into the same short trip.
03 Ghizer region · Lakes & valley life
Phander Valley
Water, cultivated fields and mountain horizons make Phander a place to pause. Spend time beside the lake and use public paths through the valley, with local guidance about where visitors are welcome.
- Make time
- Our suggestion: 2 nights, plus generous transfer time.
- Approach
- Plan the road journey from Gilgit through the Ghizer valley. Confirm the route and transport locally.
- When & base
- The warmer months are the starting point for planning. Check seasonal access and book an operating Phander stay.
- Local help
- A local driver helps with transfers; ask a host or guide before leaving established public paths.
A visit to Phander does not imply that the onward Shandur–Chitral route is open or appropriate.
04 Baltistan · Heritage & village lanes
Khaplu
Let the palace be the beginning of a visit. Add time for Balti architecture, the town and conversations with a local guide, while remembering that village lanes lead to people’s homes.
- Make time
- Our suggestion: 2–3 nights, with transfers planned separately.
- Approach
- Continue by road from Skardu through the Shyok valley, with conditions checked before departure.
- When & base
- Consider May–October, subject to weather and services. Stay in Khaplu for a less hurried visit.
- Local help
- A local heritage guide can add context and help confirm which buildings welcome visitors.
Ask before photographing people or entering religious buildings. Confirm opening arrangements rather than assuming access.
A different story, close by.
A deeper visit need not mean a longer drive. Add a specific heritage stop to a region you are already exploring.
Ganish historic settlement
Historic wooden mosques and the village’s restored public spaces offer another way into Hunza’s architectural story. The Aga Khan conservation programme documents the community work behind their restoration.
- Make time
- Our suggestion: a half-day within a Hunza stay.
- Approach
- Arrange a visit from your Hunza base; ask about the current entrance and local guide arrangements.
- When & base
- Fit it around your Hunza season and the settlement’s visiting arrangements. Karimabad is a practical base.
- Local help
- Prefer a community guide who can explain the buildings and boundaries between public and private space.
This is a living settlement. Ask permission, respect worship and support locally agreed visiting arrangements.
Jaulian monastery
Look beyond a single museum stop. Jaulian’s stupa and monastery form part of the UNESCO-listed Taxila archaeological landscape, giving a focused reason to spend longer with the region’s Buddhist history.
- Make time
- Our suggestion: a half-day, or part of a full Taxila outing.
- Approach
- Arrange transport from Islamabad or the Taxila area and confirm the site’s current visitor entrance.
- When & base
- Choose a cooler part of the day; check forecast, opening hours and access. Islamabad works as a base.
- Local help
- An archaeology guide can help connect the remains with the wider Taxila sites.
Confirm the approach and any steps or uneven ground if mobility is a consideration. Do not climb on archaeological remains.
One good detour.
A richer trip.
Start with your season and the time you have. Add a quieter stop when the route, local advice and your pace allow it.
