Karimabad keeps the forts and village lanes close. Confirm luggage access, steps, heating and hot water before booking. Attabad and Passu are day outings from this base, so allow for the return drive.
Season, pace and transport
Consider late spring to early autumn for a wider choice of outings, checking access for your exact dates. Arrange a driver for transfers and upper-valley days. The core plan includes walking and fort steps; glacier crossings and technical trekking need separate arrangements.
Budget and a change of plan

Gilgit → Karimabad
Keep the transfer gentle. Pause for valley views only at safe pull-offs, then arrive at your Karimabad base in daylight. A sit-down tea or lunch belongs in the day, rather than an extra distant excursion.
Karimabad → Attabad → Gulmit → Passu
Combine lake views, a village walk and an unhurried meal. Choose fewer stops if you want time on the water; return to Karimabad before dark rather than adding Khunjerab to the same outing.

What the duration includes
These five days start and end in Gilgit, with a Hunza base in between. Flights from Islamabad and the contingency after returning south are additional planning days. If you only have five days in Pakistan in total, reduce the route rather than removing the transfer buffer.
Bases and transport
A Karimabad base suits the forts and village lanes, while upper Hunza outings involve further road time. Ask whether your vehicle quote covers both Gilgit transfers and the local day trips, including waiting, parking and the driver’s overnight costs.
Where to add or remove time
With one full upper-valley day, choose a few stops rather than adding Khunjerab, a glacier walk and every lake activity. If village life interests you more than another viewpoint, add nights in Gulmit and use the quieter Upper Hunza itinerary.
Everyday arrangements
Ask your accommodation about cash or card payment, mobile coverage for your network, Wi-Fi and power back-up. Carry a cash contingency and keep essential addresses offline. Tell hosts about dietary needs before remote stays; confirm meal availability rather than assuming restaurants will be nearby. Spring blossom and autumn colour can be rewarding in lower Hunza; upper-valley driving depends on current conditions. Confirm the practical season rather than relying on a fixed month range.
Getting between stops
The route starts and finishes in Gilgit. If flying there from Islamabad, allow an extra city buffer and avoid relying on a same-day onward international departure.

Price Gilgit flights separately, plus a local driver for the two travel days, upper-valley outing, guesthouses, fort entries and food.
A sensible adjustment
A five-day Hunza stay is a regional journey. An overland arrival from Islamabad takes considerably longer and should not be squeezed into day 1.
