Your northern Pakistan 14-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrive and review the mountain stage
Settle into Islamabad and meet your operator to review flight status, registration arrangements and current road access. Check how cancellations would change the hotel bookings and which visits matter most to you. Keep the evening light. A flight to the mountains should begin a flexible stage of the journey, not a chain of unchangeable appointments.
Overnight: Islamabad.
Day 2: Fly to Gilgit and transfer to Hunza
If the service operates, meet your prearranged driver and continue to Karimabad. Allow the rest of the day for travel, food and rest, with brief scenic stops only where appropriate. If the flight is cancelled, stay in Islamabad while your operator reassesses the plan. Do not automatically replace it with a road journey through areas under travel warnings.
Overnight: Karimabad, if the flight operates.
Day 3: Karimabad’s forts and village streets
Explore Baltit and Altit forts with time to understand their setting and building traditions. Ask about guided access, steep approaches and the walking involved before setting off. Break up the day with a village lunch or craft visit. Keep sunset plans optional so weather and your energy can determine the final stop.
Overnight: Karimabad.
Day 4: Attabad Lake and time in Gulmit
Travel towards Attabad for a lakeside pause before spending time in Gulmit. A village walk or prearranged cultural visit adds a different perspective from roadside photography. Boat trips should remain optional, subject to conditions and a suitable operator. Return to your Hunza base or discuss a Gulmit stay in advance if you prefer less retracing on the next day.
Overnight: Karimabad, or Gulmit by prior arrangement.
Day 5: Passu and the Upper Hunza landscape
Make the Passu area the focus, with safe established viewpoints and time to appreciate the scale of the valley. A view of Hussaini bridge does not require crossing it; there is no bridge crossing included in this outline. Ask your guide about a short village walk and respectful photography, then return in daylight without pushing north to the border.
Overnight: Your Hunza base.
Day 6: Keep Hunza flexible
Choose a small cooking session, an artisan appointment or a gentle guided walk suited to the conditions. Confirm the host’s availability and any payment beforehand. This is also useful recovery time if the inbound flight was delayed. Leave the evening free and check the next day’s transfer with your driver, including route status and a daylight arrival plan.
Overnight: Your Hunza base.
Day 7: A full travel day to Skardu
Reserve the entire day for the mountain road transfer, with an experienced local driver and a route checked close to departure. Allow generous time for breaks and delays; a navigation app estimate is not a dependable schedule. If landslides, restrictions or weather make the road unsuitable, revise the journey. Do not drive at night simply to preserve a booking.
Overnight: Skardu, subject to road access.
Day 8: Shigar’s fort and settlement
After a long transfer, take a more measured day around Shigar Fort and the neighbouring settlement. A local guide can introduce Balti architecture and traditions, with time for lunch and a short walk where suitable. Check access before leaving. Return to Skardu without filling the day with additional distant valleys.
Overnight: Skardu.
Day 9: An unhurried Kachura day
Choose lake visits and walking routes that suit your mobility, weather and the time available. Upper and Lower Kachura can involve different access arrangements; ask your guide about paths, entry and any private facilities before booking. Enjoy the landscape at a comfortable pace, treating boating as optional rather than an assumed part of the day.
Overnight: Skardu.
Day 10: The cold-desert landscape
Visit an established Sarfaranga viewpoint with a reputable local driver. Take time for photography in suitable conditions, following local instructions about where vehicles and visitors may go. Avoid unnecessary off-road driving and do not assume adventure activities are included. Keep the afternoon open for rest or a short local craft visit.
Overnight: Skardu.
Day 11: Travel to Khaplu
Give the journey and Khaplu Palace a full day, with enough time to appreciate the settlement rather than arrive only for a photograph. Check palace visiting arrangements and your accommodation in advance. A short village walk with a local guide can introduce regional building traditions. Staying overnight here changes the rhythm from a long return excursion to a more spacious visit.
Overnight: Khaplu.
Day 12: Return to Skardu with breathing room
After breakfast, return to Skardu at a sensible pace with a prearranged driver. Keep the remaining time free for rest, local shopping or a missed visit that fits nearby. Reconfirm the flight and airport pickup. If earlier disruption has compressed the itinerary, use this day to recover the schedule rather than adding another distant outing.
Overnight: Skardu.
Day 13: Fly back to Islamabad
Take the flight if it operates, with an airport transfer arranged at both ends. Keep the rest of the day flexible. A cancellation can affect onward travel despite the buffer in this outline, so ask your airline and operator about the options immediately. There is no automatic road fallback in this plan.
Overnight: Islamabad, if the flight operates.
Day 14: Departure or an additional buffer day
With fixed international flights, consider adding at least one extra Islamabad night beyond this outline. If your return from Skardu ran on time, use the free time for a low-key capital visit. If it did not, the extra margin may help you recover connections, although no buffer can guarantee that. Arrange your airport transfer around the confirmed departure.
Overnight: Departure, or Islamabad on an extended version.
Practical planning for 2027
Getting around: Arrange reputable prebooked private transfers for road journeys. Domestic flights, especially those serving Gilgit and Skardu, are subject to weather and schedule changes. Do not assume a road fallback is safe or available.
Accommodation: Choose reputable hotels close to the planned daily activities; check accessibility, reviews, heating or cooling, and transfer arrangements before booking.
Costs: Budget separately for international and domestic flights, accommodation, driver and guide, entrance fees, meals, insurance and contingency days. Prices depend on dates and party size; request current quotations.
Health and practicalities: Check passport and visa requirements, travel insurance, vaccinations, weather, local etiquette, mobile connectivity, cash access and food hygiene. Carry water and dress respectfully at religious sites.
Safety: Check the latest UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office travel advice before planning or booking. Some regions and routes are subject to advice against travel, including parts of the Karakoram Highway and northern Sindh. Do not travel to restricted areas on the strength of this itinerary. Local access, permits and conditions may change.
